Clarke has until Australia’s second 2015 Cricket World Cup clash with Bangladesh on February 21 to return to the Australian side, but the skipper appears to be well ahead of his initial recovery schedule and believes that he could be fit to play in Australia’s opening World Cup clash against England at the MCG on Friday February 13.
Clarke told News Limited that he is excited to be able to play for his club side Western Districts tomorrow and he is happy with the progress his hamstring injury is making ahead of the Cricket World Cup.
“I am really happy to be playing for my Grade club this weekend and regard this as a positive step on my road to a return to full fitness,” Clarke said.
“It is exciting to be at this stage where I can consider walking onto a cricket field again and thanks to the guidance of the Cricket Australia medical staff and with the work I have put in, the signs are positive.
“At the same time I know I have to respect the fact that I am on a daily programme and there is no point in us getting too far ahead of ourselves.
“I know I need to take things one step and one day at a time and so, for now, all I am doing is focusing on things day by day and with a belief in a positive outcome.”
Clarke is expected to be named in the Cricket Australia XI for their clash with Bangladesh at the Gabba on February 5 and he will likely be rested for Australia’s World Cup opener before rejoining the side for another meeting with Bangladesh on February 21.
The rest of Australia’s World Cup squad will meet either India or England in the final of the Carlton Mid ODI Tri-Series in Perth on February 1 before they ramp up their preparations for the 2015 Cricket World Cup.
